If you like to combine a moderate physical activity with sightseeing we recommend you doing an amazing walk from Fira to Oia. It is the best way to experience the absolute grandeur of the island. The entire distance is about 10 km which takes 3 - 5 hours, depending on fitness level and stops. Avoid the hottest hours around noon, especially in summer. Make sure you have water, sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen with you and that you set off early in the morning or in the evening so that you reach Oia in sunset time. The walking path is a mix of paved streets and hiking trails. Be sure to wear a decent pair of shoes.
The hike starts at the Atlantis Hotel in Fira but you can start from wherever in town as long as you keep walking north towards Imerogivli. You will see some signs that mark the trail but these are few and far between. If you have the sea on your left then you are moving in the right direction.
The second place you will come to is Firostefani, but it will look like you never left Fira because these two towns are almost connected. Continue along the paths on the slight uphill and enjoy the views. When you walk uphill towards Imerovigli you will pass by the Church of Agios Antonios and the Church of Prophet Elias. Just before Prophet Elias Church the path will fork. Stay to the left to continue up to the church and for amazing views of the caldera or go right if you want to walk an easier trail. In front of Imerovigli there is Skaros Rock with the remains of a castle from the 13th century. If you want to hike around this detour will add up to 30 to 60 minutes to the walk. From Imerovigli all the way through to Oia the landscape becomes harsher.
At certain point you will walk a bit uphill to the Church of Panagia for another amazing view. From that point you will be walking all the time downhill admiring on your way the picturesque Oia with whitewashed buildings, windmills and an incredible view over the volcano of Palia and Nea Kameni.
